I think Asda should be as close to the town centre as possible to enable people to park there, walk into town then go back for a bit of shopping (which they will do as I've lived in a town with a large Asda store!)... Rolle College is just too far out of town. If they build Asda out of town then people will go there rather than the town (like Tesco) so the town will suffer again. Rolle College is better suited, imo, to the new leisure centre. No, there isn't anything wrong with the cuurent leisure centre (although the pool could be more child/fun friendly) but I can't think of any other site close to town centre for Asda to go so the leisure centre would have to be moved (and I don't think it should be rebuilt along the estuary as the parking would be inadequate and it would add to the inevitable traffic that a supermarket would create.

The only problems I envisage with the current proposals are parking for the train station.

I am hoping the rumors I heard about the train station closing are not true.

I only have a few fears with the ASDA. Traffic/Parking and the impact it will have on the Exe Trail.

I must confess that I find the suggestion that a poll of 75% in favour of the proposed Asda bears no resemblance to all the other surveys in the town, and to the ratio of letters in the local press.I am always a little suspicious of polls with percentage results; it would be good to know how many unique voters took part.
I have noted that EDDC have claimed, on several occasions, that the 'silent majority' support the Asda Walmart proposal, their chair even goes as far as to say that the last election result gave them a mandate for the superstore. I say to EDDC, show us the evidence for the claim as to the silent majority support, and show us where in your election manifesto there was mention of the superstore. I kept my copies and the word 'superstore' does not appear in any of them.
I would welcome an informed debate on the subject, one informed by fact and not the biased claims of ASDA Walmart or EDDC who will receive plenty from the deal. I want to see answers to questions such as where are all the cars going to park, what is the net benefit to Exmouth of such a proposal, how many jobs will be lost by other employers, etc etc and above all, is the estuary side really the place for a superstore? From what I have seen of the plans, it will result in all the views of the estuary side being lost as one comes into the town, to be replaced by the massive walls of an ASDA Walmart box, Houses and replacement sports facilities .

Welcome to Exmouth Online Sceptic. In terms of the poll, I will put the original poll back up online again for a limited time. It is a independent vote system that gives a general idea of peoples views. Please feel free to place your vote. Thank you.

Hi Sceptic... welcome to the debate!

The trouble with letters in the paper is that it's mainly those that are opposed to the plans that will write in - the likes of me, who are all for regeneration, won't bother (although I have seen one or two that are more balanced). Almost everyone I know here is in favour of Asda coming to Exmouth (including the proposed site) with just a couple of people (parents included!) who are against it.

I've seen many letters oppposing the plans but have seen none that suggest any viable alternatives. I think the majority of Exmouth agree that Tesco is no longer adequate or should hold the majority and they also agree that the town centre needs to be supported... but no-one is coming up with new suggestions.

I don't understand why you don't feel it worth writing in to the papers.I would encourage all to express their views there.
A number of alternatives have been proposed, a smaller food market on the KFC roundabout, something on the London Inn site - but none seem to appeal to EDDC (not enough money in it for them?) I have seen lots of alternative uses suggested in the Journal for the estuaryside, personally I would like to see it made greener and maybe have a few small units connected with water sports and maybe a restuarant.
Tesco are seeking to expand, they have an exhibition in the town hall this Friday and saturday that was advertised in the paper. They could use some competition though and a decent food store in the town might do that without ruining the centre
Admin, there is no need to put the poll back for me, but knowing how many unique users voted previoulsy would be of interest.
Thanks for the welcome.
