Well, have you read the Journal this week? Their lead story could throw a (welcome?) spanner in the works. A new Lidl just up from Tesco on the corner of Salterton Road and Dinan Way. Surely the answer to all those who want competition for Tesco. Will it affect the town centre, or rather, to what degree? I have mentioned before that some think Tesco have done the damage to the town centre and that another out of town store may not do significantly more.
Certainly, the expansion plans of Tesco, and the prospect of a near Tesco Lidl, must mean that the need for an Asda on the estuaryside is massively reduced - if it ever existed. Now, is there any chance of Sommerfield getting their act together?

Have you something against the Coop and M&S Trigger
and what's the other one from Germany Aldi?
That will still leave some unhappy - especially if they cannot make money from selling off our land!

-there have been rumours flying about for a long time re. a Sainsbury on the PO site .. The job centre, now closed, was once a supermarket ... no reason why it could not be again, or perhaps a post office, with the sorting section at Liverton leaving room for a third supermarket in the town centre.

Those of us who have been here for ever (it seems!)can remember before the Magnolia was built, and the then Gateway supermarket saw the demise of virtually all the others in town! This 'aint the first time round you know!!

Traffic flow in town has for ever been a mounting problem. As has been mentioned before, we live on a quarter section of the cake, the other three quarters being estuary and sea. Without major new roads, the traffic situation can only be improved, in my opinion, by clever and well thought out routes into and out of the centre towards the main arteries. The traffic infrastructure is just as, if not more , important than massive town development. We don't want , surely, to end up like Weymouth, with traffic backing up as far as Bridport and Dorchester in the summer.

Just been on the calculator, Journal front page quotes a 16,000 square METRE superstore scheme on the table from LIDL In real money that equates to ... wait for it ... 172,224 square feet.I suspect that's yet another Journal error!! at least I hope it's their error..
