hi sceptic, its nice to talk about this subject with someone. i think its important to differentiate between pollution adding to the effects of climate change/ and food miles adding to the shortening of our oil supply. both situations are terrible in their own sense. however, if we concentrate on peak oil for now,and assuming, as has been predicted, that we are hit with oil shortage by 2030, we are asking ourselves these questions:

how will supermarkets transport their produce?
how will we afford the inflated prices of food once oil hits $102 a barrell?
how will exmouth feed itself with next to no local suppliers available?
what will exmouth be like without cars?

this is not an exhaustive list at this stage! what with all the questions peak oil brings with it. the scope of the two problems is massive.

as for local produce in asda, there won't be any, maybe a token offering but nothing to be proud of. they also will not stop plastic bags until they are forced to. companies like asda make their millions through the tragedy of convenience.

if you are interested, i am starting a campaign soon called 'awakening exmouth', i tall task i know! the idea of this will centre around a season of film, most likely starting at the blackmore theatre on may 8th. the films being shown will be to do with peak oil, such as 'the end of suburbia' and 'a crude awakening - the oil crash, we don't have a plan'. also a great film called the power of community detailing how cuba dealt with the soviet oil crash in the 90's... an inspiring look at life without the addiction to oil. also an inconvenient truth, for those that haven't seen it yet.... and most likely asda walmart - the high price of low cost, because i'm not convinced this silent majority we are told want asda have any idea of the truth.

i heard a great quote recently from a guy called richard heinberg, an authority on peak oil, he said.... 'you may call yourself christian, buddhist, hindu, whatever you like. but the only thing you really worship is oil, it's the only thing that keeps your life ticking over!' an intersting concept, i'm sure you'll agree!

cheers

chris

A interesting campaign you have a idea for here. Please feel free to send the videos to me (or if in you tube as a _link_) and I can place them on the site as this is something that affects us all. I will also, depending on the type of video, stick it on www.u4eco.com, the new site I am building (btw, any comments on this site and content would be most welcome)

All those people interested in the subject of supermarkets etc, please visit the Tesco Expansion thread here http://www.exmouthonline.com/component/option,com_fireboard/Itemid,33/func,view/id,151/catid,9/ where I have invited Tesco in person, after a meeting to answer any questions you may have. Please post any questions you have before Monday when they said to me they would have a look and phone me. Cheers!

Once again, I would like to ask those of you opposed to the plans, what you think should be done instead. Is it just Asda you're against or any major retailer? Where would be a more appropriate place to situate the store? If you don't want another supermarket at all, then how do you propose to deal with the increase in customers and their needs (because Exmouth town centre certainly doesn't cater for them at the moment!)? Are you all for Tesco expanding so that they can take care of it? Instead of just rejecting the plans out of hand, why don't you let us know how you think the regeneration should go? I want to hear specifics, not just generalisations and complaints.

OK - well if Exmouth needs more, then I would prefer Tesco to expand. Then the town centre businesses are not threatened and the estuary is not spoilt.
