History Of Exmouth

View Pictures and Old Photographs Of Old Exmouth History Here

The 2 pre-Saxon parishes that form Exmouth are Littleham and Withycombe and have grown from a Ferry Quay and farm buildings to the popular seaside town you see today. The layout of Exmouth has obviously changed over the years, this is most noticeable when you trace the old shoreline that used to reach as far up as Loydd maunders on Exeter Road. The actual size of Exmouth has expanded vastly over the years with much of the built land, reclaimed land. A good example of this is Cartor Avenue Park that was once marsh land.

It is believed that Exmouth was used by the Romans as a port for the larger walled city of Exeter and evidence roman activity has been discovered with the discovery of coins. It is believed that early man was not in the town due to its exposed position from Raiders and Elements but is believed that the 11th Centaury is the earliest signs of activity can be found in the area. Despite the early signs of man at this time, it was not till around the 13th centaury that a settlement was established.

The main shopping area of the magnolia centre was opened back in 1979 as a way to modernise the bombed and badly damaged market street that once stood in it's place during WWII which was destroyed by 3 Mescherschmitt's 109s and 3 Fokker Wolfs. Today, the magnolia centre, along with the huge diversity of shops on Exeter Road, form the shopping area of Exmouth town centre. The town centre is also home to the strand gardens where, back in 1869, the old market house was demolished to make way for the green space you see today. Out of respect to those who fought in WWII, a large memorial cross now stands in the centre of the gardens which are enjoyed by residents and tourists. Every year, as a mark of respect, the remembrance parade now meets at these gardens.
