Exmouth Railway

On the 6th July 1874, after many years of uncertainty, Sidmouth was connected to Exmouth by a branch line at Sidmouth Junction via Tipton St John and Budleigh. This was dismantled under the Beeching Axe, a government scheme to help cut costs, in the 1960s. Today, it has now turned into one of Exmouth's many cycle paths where you can travel most of the old railway route.

Before Exmouth

Exmouth was uninhabitable, exposed to the elements and baron. It was the need of food that drove the first settlers to the the area which is now Exmouth. Back then, Exmouth was a very different place, windswept, swomps and grassland. The small settlement grew fast around the docks and in Roman times, became one of the busiest ports in the UK. It's importance was so great, it was as late as the 1990's that the old corn silos were demolished to make way for the modern marina we now see.

You can still see the old shape of Exmouth today with the old port, Mona Island, situated a 10 minute stroll away from our current, 2 miles of golden beach.
